Disagree Without Breaking
How to argue policies without attacking institutions.
The system is designed for disagreement. It is not a bug; it is a feature. We can fight fiercely over policy without destroying the framework.
The distinction is between policy disagreement (normal, healthy) and institutional delegitimization (dangerous). You can believe a law is wrong while still accepting the legitimacy of the process that produced it.
The Line
Policy: “This tax rate is too high and I will vote to change it.” Institutional: “The election was stolen so I don't accept the result.” The first is citizenship. The second is corrosive.
How to Argue Well
- Argue about the policy, not the person.
- Acknowledge what is true in the opposing view.
- Ask: does this set a precedent I would be comfortable with my opponents using?
- Separate your policy preference from the constitutional question.
