What Is a Republic?

Understanding the crucial distinction between a democracy and a republic.

← Foundations

In a pure democracy, 51% of the people can vote to take away the rights of the other 49%. It is majority rule without limit.

A republic, however, is a system of government where the majority rules through elected representatives — but within limits set by a constitution. Those limits exist precisely to protect the minority from the majority.

Why the Distinction Matters

The Founders chose a republic deliberately. They had studied history and knew that pure democracies tend to be short-lived and violent. They designed a system where your rights cannot be voted away, no matter how popular the idea might be at the moment.

Representatives, Not Rulers

Elected officials in a republic represent their constituents but are bound by constitutional constraints. They cannot simply do whatever the current majority wants — they must act within the framework of the law.
