Education as Price of Freedom
Why an ignorant people can never remain free.
Thomas Jefferson famously noted, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.”
Self-government is cognitively demanding. It asks citizens to evaluate complex arguments, spot logical fallacies, and understand long-term consequences. An uneducated populace is easily manipulated by demagogues who promise easy solutions to difficult problems.
Civic Literacy vs. Job Training
Modern education often focuses on vocational skills — how to make a living. Civic education focuses on how to live freely. Without the latter, we may be productive workers, but we remain subjects rather than citizens.
Understanding the Constitution is step one. Step two is using that knowledge to be an active, principled steward of your community. Civics isn't a passive observation.
